California Judicial Council Form CIV-150

Limited-scope representation in California: one hearing, not your whole case

California permits limited-scope representation for defined tasks in eligible civil cases. You and the attorney must agree in writing on exactly what is included. When notice is appropriate, Form CIV-150 tells the court and the other parties the scope of the attorney's role.

  1. Define the appearance

Identify the hearing or trial date and whether any continuance or preparation of an order after hearing is included.

  2. Agree on the limits

Review a written agreement with the attorney. A request alone does not retain counsel or automatically file CIV-150.

  3. Close out representation

If CIV-150 is filed, papers generally must be served on both you and your attorney until the required substitution or relief is completed.

Official California court resources: Download CIV-150 (official PDF) · Read California Rule of Court 3.36

CIV-150 is a notice, not a substitute for an attorney-client engagement agreement. The attorney determines whether, when, and how the notice must be filed and served. After completion, a signed MC-050 substitution or an appropriate relief procedure may be needed.

Frequently asked questions

Can I hire an attorney for just one court hearing in California?

Yes. California permits limited-scope representation in eligible civil cases, so you can hire an attorney for a defined task such as a single hearing while representing yourself for the rest of the case. You and the attorney must agree in writing on what is included.

What is California Form CIV-150?

Form CIV-150, Notice of Limited Scope Representation, tells the court and the other parties exactly which parts of a case the attorney is handling. It is a court notice, not the engagement agreement between you and the attorney.

Does submitting a request mean I have hired an attorney?

No. A request does not create an attorney-client relationship. Representation begins only after an attorney accepts the matter, clears conflicts, and you both sign a written limited-scope agreement.

Can an attorney appear for me in small claims court?

Generally no. California small claims rules do not allow attorneys to represent parties at the hearing, but you can consult an attorney beforehand to prepare.

Do you cover unlawful detainer (eviction) hearings?

Yes. You can request an attorney for unlawful detainer hearings, subject to attorney availability and a conflicts check.

Can the attorney appear remotely?

Many California courts allow remote appearances for certain hearings. Choose remote, in person, or either when you submit your request, and the attorney will confirm what the court permits.

How much does a limited-scope court appearance cost?

Submitting a request is free. Each attorney provides a customized quote after reviewing your hearing details and requested scope.

Client's mailing address for service (provide after attorney acceptance)

If CIV-150 is filed, the court notice requires the client's service contact information. Please don't enter a personal address on this form.

Limited-scope notice (CIV-150): If appropriate for your matter, the attorney and client may sign, file, and serve the court's notice identifying the agreed scope. Filing a notice can trigger service requirements on both attorney and client, and ending the attorney's court appearance role may require MC-050 or the procedure under Rule 3.36. Review the official form.
Pricing: Customized quote after review. The request itself is free. Representation begins only after attorney acceptance, conflict clearance, and a signed limited-scope agreement.

Your request is sent by email for attorney review. Please share only the details needed to evaluate your hearing; do not include confidential documents or sensitive personal information. Court rules and applicable law determine whether limited-scope representation is permitted and what filings or disclosures are required.
